March was a lot. But, we finally got some snow this April—just a little, but enough to dust up the pine trees and remind us it’s still spring in Little Mountain Town. Honestly, it’s no surprise the weather’s confused. After the way March behaved, I’m half-expecting sunshine, wind, rain and hail all in one afternoon!
The first part of March felt like ol’ dry February just dragging on and on. We had some really chilly days, including one where the high didn’t even crack 30°F. Ugh. And the wind? It was relentless for a while there and even sparked several small fires in the Sacramento Mountains (thankfully, all north and east of Timberon). Early in the month, a big storm system swept through most of the country, and while we didn’t get the blizzards or tornadoes other states did, we sure got the wind and dust. Visibility was so bad down the hill on the 4th, it caused a string of accidents. And, of course, we lost power. It may have been the electric co-op shutting us down for safety – branches and trees were flying everywhere, and any one of them could have downed a power line and started a fire.
Then mid-March rolled around and teased us with a typical Timberon False Spring. We hit the 60s, the sun came out, and for a minute there, it felt like we’d skipped straight ahead to May. Birds were singing, fruit trees and scrub oak started budding, and folks were already talking about summer—plans for opening the swimming pool, the new community garden in the works, the parade, and maybe even a few live music events. You could almost hear the BBQ grills coming out of hibernation.
By the end of the month, we were seeing highs close to 70°F. It was lovely—just a bit too lovely for March, if you ask me. Everyone I talked to said the same thing: “Winter aint over yet.” And they were right.
So yeah. March was a lot. Cold, hot, dusty, windy—and now, snow in April. Just Timberon doing what Timberon does best: keeping us on our toes.
