They’re bringing the summer cattle off the mountain. They winter down in the flatlands and finish up here in the mountains where they can graze on the grass. There are a few left, this picture is from earlier in the summer when the calves were young.
We hired a local kid to move and stack wood for us yesterday. Now we have a pile of juniper firewood outside the front door where it will stay warmer, and easier to reach. We did try and move it ourselves, but all that bending and lifting – no good for this Jane. Best to have the young’uns do it, and they earn a little pocket money too!
The electric company sent me a letter yesterday that one of my power poles is leaning too much, and I need to get it fixed by a ‘licensed electrician’. Well that sounds expensive. We called a friend of ours, a lineman, for advice. Worried about the cost.
A note about the title: Off-Mountain is a local term. A kind of Timberon slang meaning just what it says, but used as a noun.
